More ease in sitting, standing and moving.
Want to learn practical tools to be more comfortable when you’re upright, in sitting, standing and moving - finding some more ease in both mind and body?
Tried everything?
A different approach
Many people come to the Alexander Technique having already tried approaches such as physiotherapy, massage or chiropractic care. These approaches aim to treat the symptoms, strengthening or stretching specific muscles or tissues.
The Alexander Technique is a totally different approach. It addresses the root cause of pain rather than simply treating symptoms. It reveals the unconscious habits of muscle tension that could be contributing or causing the problem in the first place.
Your lesson
What happens in a lesson
Gentle, practical and grounded in the things you do every day. Each lesson has three parts.
1. Everyday activities
We look at simple movements like sitting, standing, and moving into and out of a chair.
2. Gentle guidance
Through hands-on guidance and verbal instruction, you become aware of and release the patterns of compression and tension we all bring to everyday life.
3. Active rest
Time lying down, fully supported, to encourage deeper muscular release and relief for the back.
Why it matters
The right muscles for the job
Our postural and movement habits can pull the body out of its natural alignment and balance. When that happens, we rely on the larger surface muscles to keep us upright instead of the deeper postural muscles. The result can be a collapsed or rigid posture, along with pain and discomfort.
Each lesson includes a period of active rest: lying on your back with knees bent and your head supported by a few books. Because the body is fully supported, it encourages further muscular release and maximum relief for the back.

These approaches aim to treat the symptoms, strengthening or stretching specific muscles or tissues. The Alexander Technique teaches you how to change the unconscious habits of muscle tension that could be contributing or causing the problem in the first place. It offers a calm and practical approach by addressing the root cause of pain rather than simply treating symptoms.

The society which regulates the Alexander Technique recommends a basic course of lessons which is around 20. However, it will depend on what your issue is, how far you’d like to take it and whether you enjoy it. It’s a bit like learning any new skill or perhaps a new language. I would recommend having 4 to 6 sessions to get a feel for it and to reach a decision about whether it may help you.

Some people continue to take lessons for many years at fairly regular intervals because they continue to derive benefit from it and enjoy it. The purpose of lessons, however, is to make you self sufficient in recognising and preventing the postural habits that are contributing or causing the problem.
How we hold ourselves and move is so deeply ingrained in our nervous system and our habits have gone on for decades. So changing them takes some time, practice, patience and persistence.
