Alexander Technique Teacher helping prevent chronic pain in the workplace
Why the Alexander Technique?
Protecting health, well-being and career longevity in the workplace
Learning the Alexander Technique is a very different approach to the usual ergonomic solutions, for example an ‘ergonomic-friendly’ chair. The focus is rather - the person in the chair, and how they can learn to prevent harmful postural habits and movement patterns that can result in pain and damage to their musculo-skeletal system.
After minor illnesses, like coughs and colds, more workdays are lost to musculo-skeletal pain than any other cause.
Whether you work at a desk holding a sustained sitting posture all day or you’re a clinician twisting and bending over patients, the Alexander Technique can help you understand your mechanical design better, making these demands less of a strain and help prevent the damage and pain that so often arises.
The Evidence
Gentle in practice. Rigorous in evidence
Randomised controlled trials show long-term benefits for people living with chronic pain.
Back Pain
The Alexander Technique has been shown to reduce back pain by an average of 86% in a major study published in the British Medical Journal.
‘97% of people with back pain could benefit from learning the Alexander Technique" - Spinal Neurosurgeon Dr Jack Stern
Neck Pain
A large randomised, controlled clinical trial has shown that one-to-one Alexander Technique lessons lead to long-term benefits for people with chronic neck pain, with reduction in pain and associated disability maintained 1 year after lessons began. The trial also demonstrated that people were able to improve the way they managed their pain following the Alexander lessons.
Knee Pain
Following AT instruction pain scorings reduced by 56 % (from 9.6 to 4.2) and this reduction was maintained at 15 month follow up.
Benefits include:
01
Enable people to identify and prevent harmful postural habits and movement patterns and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal problems such as back pain
02
Sitting more comfortably; using computers and mobile devices with less strain; bending more safely
03
Greater clarity of thinking and maintaining a sense of calm when dealing with challenging situations
How could I help?
Sessions are orientated to your work environment, and I would come to you.
An introductory session to a team explaining the basic principles, followed by individual sessions, offers an optimal experience.
Like any skill etc takes a bit of time and time and it's valuable to spend some time on a one-to one basis.
